Quick heads up for New Mexico concealed carry
Heads up before signing up for a New Mexico concealed carry class:
To qualify for a NM concealed handgun license, you generally need to be a U.S. citizen, a New Mexico resident (or qualifying military/dependent), at least 21 years old, not a fugitive, not a felon, not under felony indictment, not prohibited from possessing a firearm, not adjudicated mentally incompetent or committed to a mental institution, and not addicted to alcohol or controlled substances.
You can also be denied if you have certain misdemeanor issues in your background, including:
- a violent misdemeanor within the last 10 years
- a DUI/DWI misdemeanor within the last 5 years
- a controlled substance possession/abuse misdemeanor within the last 10 years
- assault, battery, or battery against a household member
The class must be state-approved and is at least 15 hours long with classroom and range time. You also have to qualify on the range with the type/caliber of handgun you want on your license.
After the class, you’ll still need to submit your application, fingerprints, fee, proof of residency, proof of age, and your training certificate, along with any other required documents.
